S4 Ep. 5: The Opening Crack - Worker Bee Honey Cream Ale
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
This Opening Crack gets a little sweet as they guys dive into the Worker Bee Honey Cream Ale from Remedy Brewing Company in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Then stick around to scrape the Bottom of the Barrel, this week discussion favorite music.
Hey! There's the opening crack. It's time. For the sideshow to the D show, we normally do where we taste and rank some epic brews. How's everybody doing today? Woo!
SPEAKER_01Doing well. Yeah. I'm ready for this one.
SPEAKER_05This one looks good. I hope so. It's kind of a sexy can. Fancy. She is. She looks so nice. Sleek.
SPEAKER_02Today we are trying the worker bee honey cream ale from Remedy Brewing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I said go ahead and take a drink. Let's dive right into this one. Shout out to Sioux Falls. Sure. Why not? We've had other beers. Well, you guys take a drink. We've had other beers from Sioux. So shout out also to like Lupulin Brewing, which is based out of Minnesota, Wisconsin, but they have a brew house in Sioux Falls. Because I visited a great place. Nice. So all right. Anyways, thoughts.
SPEAKER_04I have a brew house in Sioux Falls.
SPEAKER_02I think so.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like two location brew house.
SPEAKER_02I visited. That's where I got the glasses over there.
SPEAKER_04The little glasses? Oh yeah. Oh, like drinking glasses.
SPEAKER_02Fancy little Wait, did you think like eyeglasses? No, like spectacles. I mean that's a good idea. It's just a monocle. If you drink enough beers, you get some drinking glasses.
SPEAKER_04Good way to I can't read any of those lines.
SPEAKER_01Let me pull out my monocle.
SPEAKER_02All right, thoughts on taste.
SPEAKER_04This line looks like it just says F U.
SPEAKER_05Smooth. The beard.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Oh yes. Let's get back to that. Yes. Yes. I I agree. It's it's pretty light-bodied.
SPEAKER_01Um I like how cold it is. I don't know, that's probably just how you were keeping it, but like it Thanks, Ross.
SPEAKER_02You're welcome.
SPEAKER_01But it like it tastes really fresh.
SPEAKER_02I I agree. It's like it's like the right temperature for this.
SPEAKER_01Like we've had a lot of beers that tasted really good warm. This one I think is really good cold.
SPEAKER_02It's really refreshing at this temperature. Yeah. Like I I wonder if some more flavor would come out as it warms up, but like where it's at, it it's really good to me.
SPEAKER_04I think it's kind of boring to be honest with you.
SPEAKER_02Just straight up cream man, not not enough there for it.
SPEAKER_04I don't really get much honey when I when I taste it.
SPEAKER_05And like reading some of the components of the can, right? So subtle honey notes, which I would definitely agree with the subtle, sure. Perfectly sippable. Mm-hmm. Easy drinking.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I feel as though I get more citrus than I get honey. Like to me, it uh because of the citrus, it almost comes like closer to it's not anywhere close to a shandy, but sure. More like that than like a like a honey or a cream ale.
SPEAKER_05It's like that may be inspired when I'm gonna name this or something later on.
SPEAKER_02This would be good as a shandy with some lemonade in it. Yeah. This would be good summer beer. Yeah. Uh I'll read the description on the can really quick. It says this delectable beverage is a little brother to our ever-popular Queen Bee Imperial Honey Cream Ale, which for the record, I tried to find and could not find. Uh you get the same. Did you try using your glasses? I did. I didn't have my beer glasses. Your special glasses? Or nor did I have my monocle. So you want to see me walking around like the beer store with a monoclonal. Oh no, the Monopoly Man is here.
SPEAKER_05Sounds like a merch opportunity.
SPEAKER_02Don't pass go. Uh, you get the same crisp ale with a hint of honey sweetness that comes from the beehives out of the Dakota Honey Company. Shout out. Uh, with a lower ABV that makes this the ultimate crusher. I do agree that this could be a crusher. Hot day in the summer, right? Oh, yeah, that's what I mean. Back some of these pretty uh yeah. Hot down, summer in the city. Nobody, nobody, okay.
SPEAKER_04Back of my neck.
SPEAKER_02Getting dirt and gritty.
SPEAKER_04Bend down.
SPEAKER_02Isn't it a pity? Oh no.
SPEAKER_04Doesn't seem to be shadow in the city.
SPEAKER_02Okay, we'll stop there.
SPEAKER_04I would say um you read something about crisp in the descrip in the description, I think. Yes. I think it does have a nice crispness to it. It finishes kind of dry to me.
SPEAKER_05I would agree. Like, I don't feel like there's not a ton of depth there, right? Like it's light and then finishes dry. Yep. So I think that's a good way to describe it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, ABV on this is 5% IBUs at 20. I mean, it doesn't really have like a notable bitterness, like nothing, nothing that's off-putting or or I mean it's uh probably about right for a cream ale.
SPEAKER_01So yeah. It's a cream ale. Cream males are always safe.
SPEAKER_02I did think about you when I got this because I know cream males are not well, not not necessarily in a great way. I know Brett is not a huge fan of cream.
SPEAKER_01I'm I am not ooh, but well, what is it? But this one isn't this one isn't as creamy as a lot of the other ones. Sure, yeah. Yeah, I would agree. Yeah, a lot of the cream males like are like, oh, there's some lactose. This one is not that that is true. Uh so I chonk.
SPEAKER_05Maybe that's what it's missing.
SPEAKER_01Shout out to Chonk for that one.
SPEAKER_02Like, I have I have a soft spot for cream males though, because like when I think back to like when I started really drinking craft beer, like I got into craft beers through uh a cream ale made by somebody sitting here with us.
SPEAKER_04It was a Tuesday night.
SPEAKER_02I remember like yesterday. This just turned into a noir film.
SPEAKER_04Once I was 30 in, I thought pretty good.
SPEAKER_02Damon Damon didn't know, didn't know that I liked his cream ale, but I liked it.
SPEAKER_04Well I think I could tell. I think I could tell. Wow. I had an idea.
SPEAKER_01These two they're cream is alone.
SPEAKER_02Okay, any other thoughts before we move on to Oh, we have lost. Oh I'm sure you do. We don't we don't have time for that. Don't have time for that. But about the beer? No. No, okay. Uh let's talk about a little DD. Let's bring it uh back into the mix here. Um let's talk a little like uh beer name, pub name. Phil, what you got?
SPEAKER_05Uh so even before we kind of decided that this was shandy esque, uh, I had already written this up as the sunshine the sunshine shandy, if I can say that. Uh sure. And uh that's about as far as I got. So, as far as where you'd find this, uh, you can find this at the Wildflower Inn served by Lilac, the bartender there. So you can grab yourself a nice shandy before checking into your room.
SPEAKER_02Nice. Damon, what you got? That that that's the sound of I didn't want to go next.
SPEAKER_04Well, I just I didn't find this beer to be particularly inspiring to me. I have two name options for you. One is thin ice, I decided might be a good name for it. Uh, because it does like when you described it as kind of shallow, like it does like then I had another ship and said, Yeah, it tastes kind of thin to me. Yep. Uh so thin ice was one option. My other name option is Johnny's Baby Beer for Idiot Babies.
SPEAKER_02I feel like this is a a version from the pretty rude, I'm not gonna lie. Has popped up before.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's a category.
SPEAKER_01JBB I B B. Jibbib. Jibbib.
SPEAKER_04Jibbib. Uh you can find it at the Burnt Ends Tavern.
SPEAKER_02It would hey, speaking of burnt ends, it would actually go good with some burnt ends. It probably would. I I think uh part of that is I'm just hungry and barbecue sounds really good. For some reason.
SPEAKER_01Barbecue always sounds good. Fair. Fairish.
SPEAKER_02Okay, Brett.
SPEAKER_01No, Yuko.
SPEAKER_02Me? No. I'm running the show. Oh, fine.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so this is actually known as Bailey's Special. It is a seasonal release way up in the north. Uh, it gets transferred in and it gets stored under a glacier. And then they pour it, uh, pump it up from underneath the glacier and pour it up in the tap house. Oh, I love that. So it comes out nice, crispy cold. That's good. I like that.
SPEAKER_02It just makes me think of the water boy. Like, that's some high quality H2. Yeah, yeah. That's like glacial water that he has at the end, you know? That's some high quality beer, right there. Okay, uh, for me, uh, this is I I'm leaning into the honey part. This is the beehive bonanza, and you can find it at the hive, which is an apiary that's run by Clarice outside Waterdeep. She's done it for a long time and finally decided that she needed to make something with the honey that the bees are producing, which now that I think about it would probably be a mead, would it not? Fermented honey? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I've heard that place is the place to be.
SPEAKER_05Clarice's? Mm-hmm. Wait, no, the hive. The hive. It's the place to be. Clarice just works.
SPEAKER_04The hive is another. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's just a big that's literally an api area?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Like that you can just go in.
SPEAKER_02Sure. Yeah. You can go there. You could buy bees from her. You could buy honey from her.
SPEAKER_01Do you have to get dressed up in those like bee suits to go visit?
SPEAKER_02I don't think so. I don't she doesn't come across.
SPEAKER_01They have like a sta stockpile of them outside the door. Is there a door?
SPEAKER_02I think it's outside. Although when I first imagined this, it was like in a greenhouse. We're getting off the tracks here a little bit. No, these are the these are the details. There are no tracks. Where we're going, there are no tracks.
SPEAKER_01Somebody stepped on the bees.
SPEAKER_02They left their tracks. No, I I don't know. I imagined it being like a greenhouse, I guess, but it probably would make more sense being outside because bees would need to be get to get to like flowers and stuff. Yeah. So I don't know.
SPEAKER_05It's a combo. Greenhouse slash with some holes in the walls getting in and out.
SPEAKER_02It's fine. It's all good. You got to protect it from the weather.
SPEAKER_04Well, but if the if she's also growing the flowers in the greenhouse.
SPEAKER_01So are these natural growing, naturally growing flowers? Or is this like is she having to sink money into the credentials?
SPEAKER_05They're magical perennials. It's fine.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay. Yeah, she's got a little magic. She's she's not a sorceress. She wouldn't be a sorceress. Maybe she's a cleric. She's cleric. I think she's cleric. Is she healing the flowers or what? She's just that godly magic. There's a whole subset of cleric players out there who are like, screw you. We're not just healers. Yeah. We can tank to man. Thores over here be like, pull me in, boss. Okay, time. Let's uh go around the table here. Let's talk CR rating. Uh, one would be cream males, ironically, domestics at that end of the scale. Now that's that's how you describe this. On the other end, 20s being like Imperial Stouts, uh, double IPAs. We've had a triple IPA, it had been up there as well. Um, so where does this fall on the scale, Brett?2.
SPEAKER_01This one is super approachable. Like, it's very easy to get into craft beer by drinking this beer.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Go ahead, Phil.
SPEAKER_05Yes. And don't let this influence your opinion of all craft beer.
SPEAKER_02Like, why? Like, explain.
SPEAKER_05Because if you're like, oh yeah, craft beer is great. This was an awesome beer, and then you sit down and you drink even something that's like two steps above this or like three CRs above this, it's a very different experience.
SPEAKER_02I agree. I agree.
SPEAKER_05And a good one. Like there's not that much of a difference between drinking and domestic and drinking this. There's a little bit. Yeah, this is better than a domestic. Yes, I agree. Yes. For sure, but but you're not like venturing deeply into the worlds of craft. But welcome. It's a great start.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Yes. I I guess if you really I I agree. I I would give this like maybe a one. I just I didn't know we could go below one, so I give it away. When do we change the rules, Brett? When have we ever followed the rules?
SPEAKER_05There's no tracks. Fair, fair. There's no tracks. But even like uh uh like the honey is not super super prevalent in this, so you're not gonna like hit that.
SPEAKER_02I I don't yeah, it's just well Damon Damon, what would you give it?
SPEAKER_04Oh, like a zero.
SPEAKER_02Okay. So so you agree like with what we're saying though.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the question is like how hard is it to drink it?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. How how approachable is it for a newer beer drinker? I I agree though, like there's nothing off putting in this. Like the hops aren't overly strong. There's not notable maltiness in it. There's not overly light like even like Core's banquet to me would be a little higher on the scale than this is. Like this falls between like a light domestic and a other like full domestics. In my opinion, I guess.
SPEAKER_04It's that's fair. Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_02But I can't do it. Okay, so let's let's talk a little gay and nay here. So if somebody sat one of these in front of you again at the bar and said, hey, here's a worker bee, would you be like, yes? Damon. Is that all they set in front of me? Yes.
SPEAKER_04Is there anything behind them?
SPEAKER_02Perhaps, but we're ignoring that for now.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'd have another one.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_05I would drink another one of these.
SPEAKER_02Brett? I want another one of these. Hey, guess what? We do have another one. I say I say yay too. I think this is uh it's a it's a crusher. It's an easy drinking beer, and I I do really enjoy it. Um, but that's gonna do it for this part of the show. So if you want to know more about Remedy Brewing Company's beers, you can go to Remedy Brewcrow RemedyBrewco.com to check out their other beers. What do you need to say? Nothing.
SPEAKER_05I'm just gonna say I was thinking we hit the end, but not the bottom.
SPEAKER_01You said we've hit the end, but not the bottom.
SPEAKER_02There it is! So it is time to scrape the bottom of the barrel. We started this on the last opening crack where we pull a topic from the barrel in the room, which I need to post a picture of that so they can see you.
SPEAKER_01You promised the picture, I believe.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't think I did that.
SPEAKER_01So uh Brett is make the barrel sound really big. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It would it would if you were going like we should brand the barrel. Ooh, I'm already working on that. Yeah, okay. So before before you read the topic, so what we're doing here is got a fire going upstairs. We pull a topic from the barrel to discuss. Uh, and it could be a range of things. It could be movies, it could be like a specific like pop culture topic, it could be several things, and it could even be your favorite beam, and I'm hoping to god this is not the case. But but Brett, what is topic from the bottom of what did you scrape out of the bottom of the barrel?
SPEAKER_01It's it's the bottom of the barrel, very bottom of the barrel for me. Buckle up, folks. It is your favorite music.
SPEAKER_02Oh you not listen to music?
SPEAKER_01I don't, but man, you guys do. It's gonna be a very one-sided conversation. Oh, yeah. Okay, so I'll run, I'll run the shop on this one. So, favorite music. Go. So this is Idaho.
SPEAKER_05Point of clarification. Nope.
SPEAKER_01That's all there is. What? You take that broad of a smoke.
SPEAKER_04Uh my my favorite musical artist is Josh Ritter, R-I-T-T-E-R. Um hands down. Like this. Uh so he's uh he's from Idaho originally. Singer, songer, kind of folk, uh folk pop sometimes. Um yeah, it's just great. Love everything about him.
SPEAKER_02Okay. What was your clarifying question? I'm curious.
SPEAKER_05Like favorite song, favorite artist, favorite genre.
SPEAKER_02I think that's fair. Soundtrack, favorite. I think you need to do what you did last time. Spotify. Like bring this down for us, like talk about that. But but to start, since Damon talked about his favorite artist, Phil, what is your favorite artist? Of all time or current? Well, that's the question, isn't it? I I I'm gonna go to you, just to be clear.
SPEAKER_05Favorite artist of all time, Zeppelin.
SPEAKER_02Oh, thank you. Yes, a same favorite really, yeah. Led Zeppelin, man, like there's just something about some of those songs that just give me goosebumps that nothing else does. Huh. Like Stairway to Heaven. First time, well, it's been a long time, but the first time you hear Stairway to Heaven, like goosebumps.
SPEAKER_05Going to California, Dire Maker, Rainbow.
SPEAKER_02Over the hill and far away. Yeah. Oh, that song. That so what okay, I'm getting a lot of shit. Should you guys start?
SPEAKER_04You know, you guys just go ahead and start a separate Led Zeppelin podcast. You guys get get your lead out. All right.
SPEAKER_05Anyone's looking for a Christmas idea, I would accept Led Zeppelin records.
SPEAKER_02Fair. That would be fantastic, actually. Uh yeah, Led Zeppelin would definitely be up their favorite band. Uh so the thing was, and and I know you guys did some college radio too, didn't you? Brett, you did. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I was on the show. Still joined me.
SPEAKER_02What was your show? Like, I'm now I'm curious. This is a little side side here.
SPEAKER_01He was just quiet, scraping the even lower bottom of the bedhead. Uh it was bedhead with Brett. Yeah. So you just talk about random things. It was 8 a.m. in the morning and was not a morning person, so it was there's some bedhead. Uh, and I don't even know what we did. We played music sometimes. Did we do anything else? We talked between songs occasionally. It we basically hit the bottom of the barrel at 8 a.m.
SPEAKER_05Okay, all right. I feel like I repressed those memories for some reason.
unknownWhy?
SPEAKER_05That's the best time.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, it's college radio.
SPEAKER_02That's fair, yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's college radio. There's maybe like four people watching. Especially at that time of day.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah. No. So when when I was a senior, I was the station manager for the KFKX Radio, which was Hastings College's radio station. And we were always billed as like an alternative station, but we had gotten away from that. Like shows would play whatever. Like even in the mix, there was like classic rock and stuff like that. So when I took over, like we made like an actual effort to like be an alt station. So I got like deep into like listening to alternative music. So like the Lumineers. Um God, no, I'm not gonna be able to think of other Josh Ritter. Josh Ritter is he considered alt? Like he might be. He was like he's like folksy though. Like I've heard Josh Ritter's stuff.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, you said the Lumineers, and I wouldn't necessarily thought of the Lumineers as alt. I think they are considered. But I guess I don't really know what's meant by alt.
SPEAKER_02Alternative is not the same as alt was when we were in call it. Yeah, that's true. Because like technically, like Nirvana is considered alt music.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think more like is considered alternative.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Coldplay. Yeah. So so yeah, just going like I got really into alt music. I still listen to alt music, but when we're talking about like music in general, like I like everything. Like I'll listen to classical music depending on like what's going on. I have some in my play. Like you can if you go through like my purchase playlist on my iPad, like you just scroll through, you can see the waves in like what I'm interested in at that time. Because there may be like four or five country songs, and then it shifts to like going back to classic rock, and then here's like classical, which usually like when it's classical music, it's thinking about DD because it's like songs that set the tone for something. It's all the background music. Yeah, it is really. I mean, it's like soundtrack music almost. So, how did we get here?
SPEAKER_01So, what's your favorite? Yeah, did you actually say your favorite artist?
SPEAKER_02Led Zaplin. Okay, you stick in with that one?
SPEAKER_01Okay, oh yeah. Uh if I had to pick uh Fallout Boy, probably. I don't know. Okay.
SPEAKER_05It's all a choice.
SPEAKER_01It'll do. Um, uh next up, uh let's go genre as a whole. You since you were just touching on the alt music, you could stick to one genre of music for the rest of your life.
SPEAKER_02So so here's here's my struggle is that the definition changes over time. Correct. Like what I because like I would say like classic rock is the great play.
SPEAKER_05But you have to define it 70s to 80s.
SPEAKER_02Like what classic rock? Okay, that that I that because I agree.
SPEAKER_05Classic rock, 70s to 80s.
SPEAKER_02You can go back to 60s if you have to, but I was trying to think of like what I was listening to the radio the other day. I was listening to our classic rock station here in central Nebraska, and it was like something from the 90s is on the classic rock station. I'm like, I know. Yeah, I'm getting old. That's what that means. No, I think I think it's probably classic rock. It's like to the question you're asking, if like one group of music it it has to be classic rock. There's too many, too many great songs there. Second would be alternate music.
SPEAKER_05Gosh, I didn't know we were the same person.
SPEAKER_02Like I didn't know that. It's a problem we all have. We're very similar to each other.
SPEAKER_05So that that's what you're going with as well? 70 Days classic rock and then alternative cold play radio head. That's good. Well, what would that be called? Like 2000? Alternative, roughly. Yeah. 2010s alternative. I would say so. Yeah. Maybe.
SPEAKER_04I feel as though I'm similar. Um I will really listen to anything at any time, by and large. I think if I had to only listen to one genre of music, I think there's a good chance that I would get tired of it. Um and and bored of it. And I guess then I would just spend more time in silence, which is probably fine.
SPEAKER_02Um darkness, my friends.
SPEAKER_04That's no, that's not alt. You can't.
SPEAKER_02It doesn't mean I can't sing it. Nope. Oh stop.
SPEAKER_04It's trolls. That's the new rule. Uh it would probably be like, yeah, folk. Folk kind of Americana sort of stuff. Like bluegrass adjacent sorts of things. Sure.
SPEAKER_01Uh can I go just go NPR? NPR's bump music.
SPEAKER_00Sure, why not? That's what I would pick over music.
SPEAKER_01Like 99% of the time. Like I'm just gonna listen to some talk radio.
SPEAKER_02And this is why when you play, when you play Grand Theft Auto Vice City, you listen to public radio.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. Even on the game.
SPEAKER_02Even on the game. That's funny.
SPEAKER_01It is such oh, if you have not listened to the the golden sounds, that is, what is it? Uh B C PR. VCPR. Vice City Public Radio. Pressing issues.
SPEAKER_02That's the name of the Maurice Chavez. Maurice Chavez. And I know this because I'm playing through Vice City right now, because hopefully GTA 6 comes out in this in the spring, like it's supposed to.
SPEAKER_01And more importantly, hopefully they have a talk radio station. Yes.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's a car, right? So speaking uh not this is like a side.
SPEAKER_05The other ones were not as good. So we found at the bottom of another barrel.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Actually, I'm I'm gonna keep that to myself. We're not gonna go down that but that barrel tonight's hawk.
SPEAKER_05We already did video games. Get out of here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I know. I that's why I need to shut up. I I brought it back. I'm bringing it back in.
SPEAKER_05Music that you listen to all day long while you're working.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_05Most often.
SPEAKER_04I I don't listen to music. I really can't. Okay. Like I can't like listen to music and do like something that I need to like focus on. Yeah. Like especially if I need to like write or come up, you know? Yep. No, I can't do it.
SPEAKER_01If I'm trying to get instrumental. Yeah. If I'm trying to get shit done, classical music, no lyrics. Like cannot have a single word in it. Or else I lose.
SPEAKER_02I agree. Like it can't have anything that I have to like focus on or anything that I could potentially start like wanting to sing along with. I I lose focus, something horrible.
SPEAKER_05So I usually aim for no words, but there's a Spotify playlist called Game Music from that popular Japanese game system. Pretty much just instrumental. Nice. It'll change your life. And for me, if I'm like in a call and I need some background music, that's it. Or if I really need to focus. And then if I'm in like, hey, I gotta get shit done mode, then it's like you like turn on the intense stuff. My chemical romance. Five finger death podge. Like rank up the and then I crank it way up and get some stuff done.
SPEAKER_01So it just depends. Okay, one more we're gonna go through. Um favorite soundtrack. So that might be uh a movie, a video game, kind of a record as a whole, even maybe potentially could fit into that.
SPEAKER_02I I can start with this one. Gosh, I I have two songs that come into mind. So so right after I graduated from college, I bought the headphones that I'm wearing right now, which are grade R Grade O SOS SR60s, uh at the the uh the engineer for the radio station at the time. So I don't look at me like that. He he suggested these headphones for me because it's Bart. Bart, yes. He was his name is Bart. Bart Jones. Uh they're they're excellent headphones. And it's like when you when you have these, because they're basically like they're not like over-ear headphones, they're like basically speakers. Like oh, sure. So so they're they're they're not like uh not sound canceling or anything like that. So it's like you know, I had to like figure out like what was the song that I wanted to listen to when I first got these, and I had it down to two songs, like of all the songs I had, two songs, and it came down to the Indiana Jones theme and the Star Wars, the like the Star Wars theme song. So you just want like John Williams non-stop. Exactly. Oh, I love John Williams. John Williams is so good, get behind that. But but the reason for that is is like obviously John Williams tells stories with his music, right? But it's like it in terms of like sounds, this is an audiophile thing, is like it it goes through the lows, it goes through the mid-tones, it goes through the highs, and so you hear everything through those songs, whereas you may not with X song necessarily. So I went with something that I could like hear everything in these headphones, and it ended up being the Indiana Jones one. That's such a good theme song. Ugh. Yep. Dun dun dun dun dun dun dun anyway. Sorry.
SPEAKER_01Damon, where are you gonna take us?
SPEAKER_04Oh, uh well.
SPEAKER_01Favorite soundtrack.
SPEAKER_04This is not an actual answer to this, but it's the first thing that came to my mind when you said soundtrack. Uh it made me think of this song. I will try to sing it and we'll see if anybody recognizes where it's from. Sometimes you get so busy chasing, chasing after rainbows. When you look around your life, you find that no one's there. I started really low. I don't know. It's from Major League.
SPEAKER_02Major League. I was like, that sounds really familiar, yes. The the the song at the beginning of that movie, where it's like, what is it?
SPEAKER_04There's the long big river. Yep. What is it?
SPEAKER_02Something down the coyogue river. Rolling down to Cleveland to the lake.
SPEAKER_05Nope.
SPEAKER_01Now you know how I felt when I drew this category. I'm like, oh god. Nobody caught it. So where are you taking the soundtrack class?
SPEAKER_05So I narrowed it down to three.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_05One job. Well, I got to do it. Like Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. Fantastic. Oh yeah. Any of them. But uh Almost Alice.
SPEAKER_02I was gonna go there.
SPEAKER_05Sorry. It's a soundtrack to the house in one of my head.
SPEAKER_02Can you can you say the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack? Because it's it's a it's basically a mixtape, though.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's why it's the greatest.
SPEAKER_02Yes, it is. It qualifies, but okay, fine. There's an official soundtrack.
SPEAKER_05Um awesome mix boy. And oh, what was my third? Oh, uh the uh Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, which was a lot of Danny Elfman, which is fair right up there with John Williams. Damn, you I was going I'm so sorry. That is still a great soundtrack. It is so good.
SPEAKER_02So you you made me think of something though that we should talk about briefly. Is like best soundtrack songs. Because if we're talking like as a whole soundtrack, like you're talking about like telling a story with an album. Like that's where like Star Wars and those, like they're great. Specific songs, how about like Han Zimmer's Pirates of the Caribbean theme? Yeah, or the Avengers theme that Alan Silvestri came with the um god, now I can't even do it. But the Avengers theme is pretty classic, and then that ran through the movies too.
SPEAKER_01Any of the any of the James Bond uh intro songs?
SPEAKER_02Okay, deep cut. How about uh I think it's pronounced Ineo? Ineo Morcone, the good, the bad, the ugly. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, if you go listen to that Son, yeah, it's iconic.
SPEAKER_04And then I don't know how much I'd want to listen to that song.
SPEAKER_02Game of Thrones, that's uh Raman DeJwadi, something like that. He also did Westworld. Oh yeah. That's good too. So like I I think there's other like if you just think of like iconic movie music.
SPEAKER_03How about this one? Oh yeah. The other nice cartoon.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, there were a bunch of like Darkwinged Duck, too. Yeah, Dark Wing. All of those were the whole family came out.
SPEAKER_02Let's get dangerous.
SPEAKER_03Darkwing Duck.
SPEAKER_05I don't remember the intro song to Gargoyles, though.
SPEAKER_02It was it was amazing. It was instrumental. Just instrumental. Straight to watch gargoyles.
SPEAKER_04Um But the the Batman the Animated Series theme song is also iconic in that sort of a way.
SPEAKER_02100% such a and then like the the animation with that one, like where like the the spotlights on the blimp, like it looks like eyes, and then it turns into the blimp, and then he's like that that's an excellent one. Like the G.I. Joe theme song. Damon, how about uh uh Thundercats?
SPEAKER_04How about 'em?
SPEAKER_02That that that was a cla that was a classic theme song.
SPEAKER_04I don't know. We might be on a branch on that one.
SPEAKER_01I think you've got to be. Did you not watch Thundercats?
SPEAKER_04I watched it.
SPEAKER_01All I can remember is Thundercats, Thundercats, Thundercats. Ho! Yes, all I remember. You've never seen Thundercats. Never seen Thundercats? And Schnauzer? Snous Snuffles was the one?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the little fuzzy dragon dude. Yeah, I know who you're talking about. I think you did that too. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, how about how about like uh Are we doing two of these tonight? Probably not. Uh let's talk a little bit about like favorites, like favorite song that you have. Like this could be a myriad of things. No pressure.
SPEAKER_04Uh that's the hardest one.
SPEAKER_02So okay, I'll start. Fine. Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_04So I think this is just a currently question.
SPEAKER_02Like right now, like what's your favorite song of the right? I don't think that I could possibly then then then I could tell you what song like that I would want to listen to right now. What would that be? Go.
SPEAKER_04Uh it's gonna be a Josh Ritter song. Uh and probably go with homecoming.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_04Right now.
SPEAKER_02But I don't want to look that up later.
SPEAKER_04Like I listen to songs so much just based on mood. Totally. And like what do I what do I feel like right now? That it's that I to pick a favorite song. I couldn't do it.
SPEAKER_02I I think I think I I agree with you. That's why it has to be like, what what is it right now that you go to? Although I think like Stairway to Heaven always pops into my mind when I think favorite song, but but right now two songs come to mind. Um one of them is Over the Hills and Far Away by Led Zeppelin. And I I had heard that song before, but I really like lately like listened to it and like try to just get the feels for it and like how it starts off like so like slow and very laid back, and then he like goes into the chorus. Uh it's it's just such a good song. Holy crap. And then the other one is a song by Jukebox the Ghost.
unknownOh no, I can't.
SPEAKER_02That's a Scooby-Doo villain. Jubox Ghost. Uh so funny thing is they made that up. They do they when they tour around the country, they've done it in Denver several times. They did it in Omaha in the last two years. No, but they do a they do a concert called Halo Queen because they're they sound a lot like Queen. Okay. Um, but they do a Halloween concert where they call it Halloween, where they sing all of Queen's songs. And I they might dress up, I guess. I've never been to it, I've just heard about it. Um but I can't I can't think of what the name of the song is now. But it also like starts off very slow, like just one voice, and then it kicks in like with this drumbeat. I'll have to have you guys listen to it sometime.
SPEAKER_04But it's you like dramatic music.
SPEAKER_02I do, but I think that's also part of like DD part of me too. Like things that set the tone, and that typically is stuff like that.
SPEAKER_04So Phil and Brad are scrolling through the side.
SPEAKER_02Which one's it gonna be?
SPEAKER_05Like, what are songs that I just love listening to every single time I hear them? Right? Like, because I I don't know if I can ever pick one. One song that is I've always like loved since I've heard it, and I listen to frequently as clocks by Coldplay. That one. Uh Landslide, but I prefer the Smashing Pumpkins cover over the original. Although Fleetwood Matt killed it, I would always listen to that too. Um, and then this is Stranger Things fault. I love this song anyway, but when they redid Separate Ways, Worlds Apart for Stranger Things, that like hits on a whole other level. And it's the build like that they put into it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you were talking about and the original uh artist for that, of course, was Journey. Yeah, and this still, I think Steve Perry does part of it. Which uh I do get in an argument with my boss uh every now and then. Shout out, Mike. He he he he likes to argue with uh uh another person in town and I about how he says that Journey sounds like like all the journey songs sound the same. I think they do not sound the same. Some do, not all of them.
SPEAKER_05Well, I think the Journey Song was one of our first dance songs. Like faithfully. Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Generally all artists have a sound.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Sure. Right? That's what defines you.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I feel as though generally like if you took all of the songs of any artist, a lot you know, 70% of them you could say sound the same. Sure.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And then there's always stuff where they're playing around and trying different trying different things, different things, but then those are the ones that like when you go to the show, nobody wants to listen to. True. They want the kids, right? Yeah, exactly. You know, so like I don't know to like knock an artist for songs sounding the same, like they're also, especially at that level, generally trying to make money. Right. And you and you produce the things that are gonna sell. Absolutely. And if you produce enough of the things that sell, then the label might let you make a few other ones that don't sell. Right. But Brett's still screwed.
SPEAKER_02Because he found us and is it thrift shop by McLamore?
SPEAKER_05I didn't even I figured it was gonna be the tunnel walk.
SPEAKER_04Ooh, okay can Brett name a song.
SPEAKER_02So funny. Sorry, do you have one? Because I don't want to interrupt you if you have one. No, let's go with yours first. I was just gonna say, I'm gonna let you finish. Speaking of the tunnel walk, like that is like a legit intro to a song that the Alan Parsons project did. So serious is the intro to the song. Uh, but now I got why is it that any other time I can pull these random things out of nowhere and then now on the show I can. Because we've hit the bottom of the barrel. We've hit the bottom of the barrel. So yeah, hop in. I will find it's called Eye in the Sky.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if I like this answer, but I'm gonna go with Pain by Three Days Grace. Oh, that's just like the raw emotion songs. Yeah. That's what I'm going to.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. It is called Eye in the Sky, Alan Parsons Project. But the beginning, the intro to that song was called Serious, which is the Tunnel Walk song. It's also the Chicago Bulls song, and about 900 other sports teams use it.
SPEAKER_04Why does the intro to the song have its own name? So it's funny you mentioned that. Like movements? Yeah. Kind of when classical, you know, they used to write songs movements.
SPEAKER_02Boston did that as well. So Boston's song called Long Time has an intro. That song is the whole thing with the intro is like eight minutes long. The intro is called foreplay, and it's like four and a half minutes long. But the main song was different then.
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Different, like like how?
SPEAKER_04Like when you're well, like no one listens to albums anymore. Right. True.
SPEAKER_05I asked someone this the other day.
SPEAKER_04You like that Boston, like you would listen to the album, and you like you would just put the needle on and you would and so it would make sense to have it as the intro is four minutes and then it's like when they play We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions back to back.
SPEAKER_05Like those songs are meant to go together. Right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_05It just feels like that. I asked someone that the other day. I'm like, do they still create records or albums to flow in a story? And I feel like some of that gets lost today. So it's not the same. They're looking for the hit single.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. It's funny you mention that because if you've ever wondered why like you can't buy Garth Brooks music on iTunes, it's because he you can only buy it on Amazon and you have to buy the entire albums because he says that his his albums tell a story. He wants you to buy the entire thing. That's why you can't just go buy, you know, also Call and Bat and Rouge or something.
SPEAKER_05You hit the genre I don't listen to.
SPEAKER_02So country music. I listen to country music too. Not as much anymore, but I used to. 90s country, yeah.
SPEAKER_04That may be true, the thing that he says about his albums. Also, you have to pay more for the whole album.
SPEAKER_02True. You do. So in theory, you probably sell less, especially these days. Maybe. But here's the thing. I bet he's doing all right. I'm sure he's doing fine. Yes. Here's the thing that frustrates me about that, though, is like you can go on Amazon and buy his album, but I'm still probably not going to listen to the entire album in a sitting. It's gonna get mixed in with things that I listen to.
SPEAKER_05So let's be fair. The only time I listen to an album is when I put the record on.
SPEAKER_02For sure. Because you really don't have a choice. Yep. Unless you want to guess.
SPEAKER_05And usually there's like three songs I want to listen to, but I listen to the whole thing.
SPEAKER_02Nope, that wasn't it.
SPEAKER_01I have listened to flip it over, then you gotta swap wrong side.
SPEAKER_05Albums and iTunes sometimes. If I'm like trying to suss out a new artist or something like that, I will sit and like listen to an album to figure out if it's are they storytelling? Is it something that I like? Or someone suggests one to me.
SPEAKER_01Shockingly, do not do that. Why am I not surprised?
SPEAKER_02What's uh what I was gonna say is like what's your like go-to like workout like pump up song if you had one.
SPEAKER_0590s jock jams.
SPEAKER_02I I agree with that too. It's another very specific time in the world. What is this working in music history? I know, I don't know. Also, I don't work out. Look at me. I'm where's not I need another beer. Let me reframe rephrase the question. What's your favorite beer drinking song? That's what I call music. Roll out the barrel. Polka music. Wait, what was the question? Sorry.
SPEAKER_04I don't know. You asked it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, beer music. Sorry.
SPEAKER_05I feel like that has to be country. That's a pretty good one. Um put a drink in my hand, isn't that a country song?
SPEAKER_02It's pretty every like two-thirds of country songs are about drunk. About drinking. Drinking, your girlfriend did you wrong. Or your truck.
SPEAKER_05Your truck broke. Your truck done broke.
SPEAKER_02Boo-hoo. Oh man. Or you're trying to get a new fishing boat. Something like that. A bass boat, something. I don't know. All right. What up? Any other thoughts on music before we get out of here? That you didn't get to answer. I I think I can.
SPEAKER_05You don't want me on my favorite closing time. Let's shut this baby down.
SPEAKER_02All right, that's gonna do it for this episode. Stay tuned for more beer reviews in the future. You can check out our regular show, Bards and Barrels, anywhere podcasts can be found.
