S4 Ep. 10: The Opening Crack - Bierstadt Lagerhaus Dunkel
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The boys crack the top on the Bierstadt Dunkel a delightfully easy drinking beer from Bierstadt Lagerhaus in Denver, Colorado. And the cult classic TV show Firefly is what get's scrapped up from the bottom of the barrel!
Hey, there it is. It wasn't bad. It's not bad at all. It's time for the opening crack, the sideshow to the D show we normally do, where we taste and rank some epic brews. How's it going tonight, gentlemen? Good. We made it through the crack. Hey. Just barely. Oh, it's it's harder than people think.
SPEAKER_02Be honest about this.
SPEAKER_03Right hand, left hand. Like, what'd you go with? Left hand?
SPEAKER_02I went left hand because it's what I always do, even though it's not my dominant hand. I think it's too smooth.
SPEAKER_03Like it's too perfected, and it doesn't, it's like it feels awkward to try the other hand. But I think because of that, it gets a little sharper pull. I don't know. I don't know. Anyways, I'm Ross. How do I crack right-handed? How do you crack? Uh right-handed. How do you crack, Damon?
SPEAKER_00Typically vertically.
SPEAKER_03That's usually a good plan. Which hand? Let me rephrase the question. Which hand do you crack with? Probably right. Let us know in the comments. I don't know. I don't know. Yeah, let us know in the comments uh which hand you crack your beers.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes for fun I do one-handed.
SPEAKER_03We haven't even started the episode. We're already side rails here. Really?
SPEAKER_00Lefty.
SPEAKER_03I don't know why. Nothing else is left-handed over here. Just just a switchcracker. I guess. Anyway. Related question. Yes. Oh no.
SPEAKER_00We haven't even gotten through introduction yet. Related question. Do you put on your socks and then your shoes? Or do you put on sock, shoe, sock, shoe?
SPEAKER_03Oh no, it's it's grouped together. Socks.
SPEAKER_00So socks and then shoes.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Yeah.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03Do you do you know somebody that does sock, shoe, socks, shoes?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, my brother does sock, shoe, sock, shoe.
SPEAKER_03Whoa. Really? He's worried instead of sets, he's worried about complete feet. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02What happens if he gets interrupted in like mid?
SPEAKER_03I don't know. He's got one shoe on.
SPEAKER_00So he's so every once in a while I try it out.
SPEAKER_03This is what happens is I and how's that go?
SPEAKER_00It feels different. Sure it does.
SPEAKER_03Like very out of order.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I don't know.
SPEAKER_04It's like I can I can see it with snow boots.
SPEAKER_00Uh why?
SPEAKER_04Because it's a it's a commitment. Like you're putting on the boot, and it's like here we go.
SPEAKER_03I mean, uh we are scraping the bottom of the barrel at the beginning of the episode tonight. Oh, yeah. Who are we against?
SPEAKER_02Maybe we popped the top off.
SPEAKER_03I'm Ross along with me tonight. Brett, Phil, Damon. Uh yeah. Let's actually introduce our beer. Then we can come back to putting shoes on. Uh, tonight on the opening crack, we are featuring the Beerstad Dunkel from Beerstog Lager House in Denver, Colorado. Gentlemen, go ahead and take a taste. Let's discuss. Now that we're five minutes into the episode and we're finally tasting the beer.
SPEAKER_04Ooh.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I like this.
SPEAKER_03So it's a dunkel. It's a dunkel. Uh so it's wait for it. Dark. Dark. Yes. Uh, the official description of this from uh Beerstad's website is the dark side of lager. Often overlooked. Dunkel is the original beer style brewed in the ancient villages of Bavaria. Despite Pale Lager's modern day popularity, this variation did not even exist until the 19th century when Rhine Rhine heist Gabot. Bavarian beer purity law. Yes.
SPEAKER_04This was made in Barovia?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that sounded a lot like a lot like a made-up name for Strahd.
SPEAKER_03He's on his spare time, he's just brewing some dunkels.
SPEAKER_02So the story got exaggerated.
SPEAKER_03We'll come back there in just a second. So Rhine Rhine Reinheisgebot, the Bavarian beer purity law, was enacted in 1516. Dunkle became Germany's first standardized lager beer style. While some beer drinkers uh mistakenly only drink dark lager, in colder months, we invite you to try this staff favorite at your earliest opportunity, which happened to be today for us. So yeah, those are the quick to it. Uh ABV on this one is 5.5% with uh no IBUs listed, and I would agree with that.
SPEAKER_02So typically, right, like a German-style beer, was that served room temperature for the most part?
SPEAKER_03Probably, I would guess. So I wonder 1500s, yeah. Probably. Well, okay, yes. If you have the old Kinmore refrigerator in the back room. But I'm wondering if the taste of some poor little kid is peddling his way back there towards his name is Ken. Sorry, I feel like his name is Ken. Yeah, Kinmore. More. Ken! More! That's where they came from. Okay, please, please finish that thought. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01That was it. Maybe it'll taste different when it warms up. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I am kind of interested to see like as it as it sits a little bit, if the flavor, if more flavor comes out of it. I think that's what caught me off guard a little bit, is that like even for a dark beer, I don't feel like there's a ton of maltiness, and there's not like strong maltiness in there.
SPEAKER_00I don't get a lot of like caramel sort of flavor. The first flavor that I got was smoke.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_00Or like roasted the roasted sorts of flavor. Which would make, you know, the darker the malt, the the more of that tends to be there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, sure. Yeah. Uh Phil, would you mind describing the can to the audience if you would be so kind?
SPEAKER_02I would love to. So uh in the true dunkel fashion, it is kind of a darkish brown label um with some uh almost a muted gold like filigree around the name of the beer.
SPEAKER_00What a great word.
SPEAKER_02That's what it is, isn't it? No, I no, it is. That's what it looks like, yeah. Uh and then the beer style dunkle, uh brewing tradition, um gives you their website. I it it's very reminiscent of what this beer looks like, and they do actually have a picture of what the beer looks like in one of their fancy lager glasses that you could actually probably get at their brewery with the like kind of the art deco lettering on it.
SPEAKER_03That's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_02And I'm comparing the color in the glass to the color in that is oh dang, it's pretty close. Pretty accurate, actually.
SPEAKER_03All right, nicely cut.
SPEAKER_02I did not pour that good of a head on the one that I made for sure, but they'd probably pour that off the tap, I would guess.
SPEAKER_03That that friends is truth in advertising because you don't get a big Mac that looks like the ones in the commercial, but that beer looks pretty dang close. It does. Uh the I like the uh the font choice. We're gonna get deep. The font, it's like very like Bavarian style almost. I don't know if that's what you would call that, but it's like just kind of fancy script writing.
SPEAKER_02Script, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Sworn this was English. What? Oh it is English. There's some German on the camera. Font is Bavarian ish. Is there any is there any German on here?
SPEAKER_02Lager house. Beer city.
SPEAKER_03Everything else is in English to pass the you know certain laws in this country.
SPEAKER_00Uh so in lager uh fashion, lagers typically have like a sort of a clean, crisp sort of there's not typically like a lot of like aftertaste or finish. Yeah. Um I would say this it doesn't really hang around the the palate a lot. It's seems pretty smooth to me.
SPEAKER_03But I I I agree with their description, like you know, you think most dark beers and during winter time, and I would agree with that statement for the most part. This is one that at least from this first taste probably wouldn't be too bad in June. Maybe maybe not like August when it's 100 degrees out. I don't know if I could do that, it wouldn't feel quite right, but as it's warming up, I'd be able to do that. I probably would. You would, would you?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, if it's like a cold air-conditioned place.
SPEAKER_02If you're inside where it's down in the refrigerator with Ken Moore, yeah. I will say as it warms a little bit, I think if I was gonna drink it in the summer, I would want it cold. Because I don't think like it was much much lighter. I think maybe you're I don't know. Now at this point, I'm like, okay, I taste more of the like roastiness, and that makes me think of like winter months, but the roastiness is definitely coming out more. Yeah, I agree. I think so. But it is clean, it's it's very drinkable.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I love it. Uh let's uh we're gonna do something a little different tonight. So normally at this point, we would we would have all come up with a pub and a beer, and we'd start sharing those to kind of like bring the DD into the episode. We're gonna do something just slightly different tonight where instead of each of us coming up with one, we're gonna kind of like brainstorm a little story/slash beer and pub here. So on the fly, we're doing it live. Live in air quotes. Yes.
SPEAKER_04The signal is not edited later.
SPEAKER_00The sign says live. That sign says on air. I see the red light on.
SPEAKER_03We're recording, so it's good. We're good to be happening. Uh so let's start throwing out some ideas for where this beer is from. What is it? I I mean, I feel like we've already started a bit of a story here. Like, you know, Ken. The the the bar owner's name is Ken Moore. It has to be. He lives in Barovia. So there's a a Barovian dunkel.
SPEAKER_02When was this style design? He's been trapped there since when?
SPEAKER_03Like 1516.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was into the mist. What's the starting town in Christ of Strahd?
SPEAKER_03Uh Villachi? No, Velaki's the big town, right? Uh Barovia, because it's it's the city and village.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so the village of it's gotta be a beer from there. Sure. I like that. It's a Barovian beer, a true Barovian beer. Now, is Ken the okay, the beer exists there, whatever. The real questions are does Ken make the beer? Or does Ken just have to like manage the inventory down in the basement?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's the he's he's like shuffling all the kegs around. You know? He's he's like a runner.
SPEAKER_04He's he's like the kegerator.
SPEAKER_00He's like, has some sort of punishment.
SPEAKER_04Oh, right in an indentured servant or a slave or something?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. He is he owes a debt. Okay. Right? Uh that can almost never be repaid.
SPEAKER_03And he picked a bad time to wander in the mist, apparently.
SPEAKER_00And so he he's he's just gonna move all the equipment around. He's gonna move the big heavy kegs around. He's gotta clean up after everything.
SPEAKER_04Is he like the size of the keg?
SPEAKER_02I picture him as being small.
SPEAKER_04I don't know why, but I Well, I guess it doesn't have to be human either.
SPEAKER_00I I feel as a dwarf.
SPEAKER_02Dwarf or gnome, one of the two. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I feel as though I feel as though there's uh some sort of fire breathing creature involved to roast. Yeah. Oh we just leveled up the campaign.
SPEAKER_03I like that. So does he tend to the the the flames and the creature?
SPEAKER_00Ken.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Ken. Yes. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Somebody's got to.
SPEAKER_02Or do you think it gets its color?
SPEAKER_03I feel like it had to be a little bit more. It's well filtered, though. Well filtered. Yes. It's like that civic cat coffee. Alright. So Ken Moore is the not intern. He's the servant man for this brew house slash tavern.
SPEAKER_00I think it's like a I think it's a smokehouse.
SPEAKER_03Ooh, okay.
SPEAKER_00I think they're smoking all sorts of things. That's fair. Right? I think they're they're smoking fish. Venison. Yeah. Sure. Yeah. Whatever you got. You bring it in.
SPEAKER_02Children. They'll smoke it.
SPEAKER_03You bring it, we smoke it. Yeah. Wow.
SPEAKER_00And while they're smoking it, you can have one of these tasty, tasty poop beers.
SPEAKER_03We need a name for the beer. What's the name of the beer though? Poop beer.
SPEAKER_02The dragon's defecation.
SPEAKER_00What?
SPEAKER_02The dragon's defecation.
SPEAKER_00Maybe uh maybe Ken's defiance.
SPEAKER_03Ken. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Right? At some point he tried to defy this uh creature.
SPEAKER_03Sure. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And as punishment for that, he's forced to work for an all time in this place.
SPEAKER_04He has nice hints of children fingers. So the campaign is rescue Ken. Oh, yeah. That's good, actually. And all the players uh have to be Barbie.
SPEAKER_03Write that down. Just smashing up all the genres. Put them all in. Just for the record, we're not sponsored by Mattel. But if you're listening from Mattel, please, let's talk. You'd take their money. Why not? Make a lot more than I do. Alright, what are we missing yet?
SPEAKER_04Uh a what we are missing is a Ross themed Kendall.
SPEAKER_03Oh why is it a Ross themed Kendall?
SPEAKER_04Because you said it. You said you said the Mattel thing. Oh, oh, okay. Okay. That's what we need.
SPEAKER_02Or Bobblehead. We need to name the pub or the beer house. Ooh, yeah, probably. Ken. It can't be out of Ken.
SPEAKER_03Is it? Oh yeah, this would be something. The misty something, perhaps. It is Barovia. Not talking a lot of sunshine here.
SPEAKER_02Or shrouded. Something.
SPEAKER_00I like shrouded.
SPEAKER_02The shrouded is. This is just the adjective.
SPEAKER_03I don't know what noun to put it. Shrouded. We gotta work back in the smoke, because this is a smoke house, right? Smokehouse tavern.
SPEAKER_00Smoggy. Smoggy bottoms.
SPEAKER_03Smoggy bottoms. Smoggy bottom.
SPEAKER_00Shrouded entrails. The Shrouds of Silence.
SPEAKER_02Don't dislike that one.
SPEAKER_03Hello, darkness, my old friends.
SPEAKER_00Misty Musings. Yeah, the misty. Cause that dragon's opening.
SPEAKER_04Wait, are we doing the beer? Is it the beer or the beer?
SPEAKER_03Shovel, his never mind.
SPEAKER_00His leavings.
SPEAKER_03His leaving. I gotta shovel his leaving. His leavings. This is our new thing. You gotta always make a song.
SPEAKER_00The misty winds.
SPEAKER_03Ooh, the misty winds. I like that. Alright with that.
SPEAKER_02Either the misty winds or the shrouded winds. The shrouded winds.
SPEAKER_03The shrouded winds, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Misty winds sounds more like a port to me. Or like nautical. Yeah. Yes. For some reason.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and this would not be a port city. So shrouded winds, it is. I like that.
SPEAKER_04Located in the village of Barovia.
SPEAKER_03Yes. With a defecating dragon.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Save can.
SPEAKER_03Well, that was fun. Save can hashtag save can. Uh okay, so let's uh let's let's come on back to the beer. Uh it's time to do our challenge rating, uh, CR 1 to 20, one being cream ale's domestics, etc., 20 being Imperial Stouts and much stronger beers and the like. Uh Phil, you're gonna start us off tonight. I'm thinking like a five. Okay. Any particular reason?
SPEAKER_02It's really easy to drink. It's a dark lager, but it's still a lager. So super drinkable. Um if you don't like roastiness, you know, you might not necessarily like it, but it's not heavily roasted, truthfully. So it might even be like a three, but I'll go five.
SPEAKER_03Okay, Brad.
SPEAKER_04I'm I'm thinking six or seven-ish. Five, uh somewhere in that ballpark. Uh six, seven, eight. Uh only because it's a dark beer and they've got a little bit more of a punch to them. Sure. It's not much of a punch. That's a very strange. Like it's gotta be more than one, but sure. Not much more.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I don't I don't disagree with that. Uh, I would give it an eight. Only because I I think dark beers, if we're talking about baby beer drinking here, right? Baby beer drinker here, dark beers tend to turn beer too. I don't go that far. I probably should. Dark beers scare people, they do for whatever reason. It's like this this is not a scary beer. This is five percent alcohol, not any bitterness to it. The malt is nice and smooth. Yes. I was thinking, I was thinking about your idiot baby baby beer drinkers.
SPEAKER_04DVDs, we have we have way too many alliterations. If you were coming from like a seltzer to a beer, like this is a beer.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it is a beer.
SPEAKER_04True. Like you have to be like, I want to drink a beer to drink this.
SPEAKER_02But if you're coming off a domestic lager to this, less of an image.
SPEAKER_04Less of a jump. But if you're coming from like non-beer drinking to this, right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but if I but I agree with Phil's point. Like, if we're talking like a straight bud coarse banquet drinker, this is not that big of a leap for them. So I I I mean for them it would probably be less so. But to uh to me, it's a higher score only because dark beers tend to scare people.
SPEAKER_02They'll be scared by the word dunkle and they'll be scared by the color.
SPEAKER_03Yes, which is I would guess why most people just call it a dark lager because I don't know what dunkle means. But anyway, Damon, what do you have?
SPEAKER_00We fear things we don't understand. Correct. I was I was gonna say three. This is a three. Ooh. Uh, cuz what's hard about this?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it not much. Nothing.
SPEAKER_00I don't just pour it, drink it, get on with your life.
SPEAKER_02Ignorance is what's hard about this beer.
SPEAKER_00Then I was sort of thinking about because you guys are talking about uh you know the difference between like going from a domestic lager style beer to this. I was thinking about an equivalent of some sort. Like going from like milk chocolate to dark chocolate. Yeah. Right. And obviously there's there's some pretty intense dark chocolate. Sure.
SPEAKER_01We're not talking that high at cocoa.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, in the world, but like it's still chocolate. Like, yeah. Like, come on. Like, do you like chocolate? Yeah, like is the base question. People eat chocolate all the time, they don't care that it's dark. Right. So, yeah, just like it's supposed to be dark. Drink it, get over yourself.
SPEAKER_03You know, one one of these days we should we should arrange a panel of idiot baby beer drinkers and have them give us what their score is just to see where where we're at. Yeah. Like how how off or where where do they fall like in our rankings when we're trying to put ourselves in their shoes? Because really it's never fair, because we all like a wide range of beers.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's the chat. That's the problem that I always have with this.
SPEAKER_03Right, is trying to put yourself back in those shoes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's like some of us like pickle beers, and then there's Damon.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Same person. The hard part is we're not really friends with those people. Right.
SPEAKER_03That's what can we find but we know some out there somewhere. If you would like to volunteer, you can email us. If you'd like to self-identify it as an IBBD.
SPEAKER_04Also, let us know why you're listening to this. An IBBD.
SPEAKER_03This is your title for today, IBBD. What does that mean? Nothing. It's fine.
SPEAKER_00Not an IBS. That's different.
SPEAKER_03Uh okay. Uh, if this beer was set in front of you again, yay or nay, Phil. Yeah, actually, my glass is empty and I'd love another.
SPEAKER_02So uh I say yay.
SPEAKER_04I would absolutely say yay, but I'm really curious of what Damon's gonna say. Because you like you like more beers that have a punch.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, I would say probably.
SPEAKER_04Probably okay.
SPEAKER_00More than I thought I was expecting. I don't so so the question if they like if I was gonna pull something else out of the bag behind me tonight, I don't think that I would pull out another one of these. Sure. Because there's nothing to me that seems really special. Yeah, sure. Or unique about it. Sure. Um like I think it I I would be happy to if have another one, but what it is.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But not necessarily something you want to go back to. You want something more interesting. Sure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think okay, yeah. Had I've had that. I've had you know quite a bit of that. Sure.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_00So okay, so that's not a I don't mean to uh I'm not trying to be critical of the beer.
SPEAKER_03No, it's just right.
SPEAKER_00No, I just don't think I really need another one.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_03Uh okay, so that was the Beerstad Dunkel from Bierstad Lager House in Denver, Colorado. If you want to check out their other beers or uh read more about this beer, you can go to their website, beerstadlogger.com. But now it is time. Time to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Don't whack your mic. Okay. What's tonight's topic from the bottom of the barrel, Brad?
SPEAKER_04From the bottom of the barrel.
SPEAKER_01Oh.
unknownUh-oh.
SPEAKER_01Wait, time out.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Have we posted a picture of the barrel yet, Ross?
SPEAKER_03Yes, it was, it was it was there last week because I had the picture of the sign with the barrel. Alright. It was. Yes. Simply Firefly. Ooh, okay. Cult classic TV show. Yes.
SPEAKER_04Have you seen it? Yes. The first question. Okay. Yes.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so we all see it. So that's a good start for this topic.
SPEAKER_00The piece of paper just says Firefly.
SPEAKER_04It just says Firefly. For the record, like we filled these out a long time ago and we forgot all about it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't remember that one being in there, but I do like that topic. Uh so this is cult classic, sci-fi TV show, Nathan Fillion, uh, Alan Tudik. Alan, that's what I was trying to. That guy.
SPEAKER_04Yes. That's been in everything else. Tangent off of Firefly. Alan Tudik is amazing. He's also been in everything else.
SPEAKER_03Yes, he is so busy. He also is a mastermind. Yes. Because how else do you get a company like Disney to probably pay you a million dollars to make just random sounds and no actual words for Moana? He was in Raya and the Last Dragon. He played the rolly creature that I'm pretty sure all he did was like through the whole movie. That's all he had to do. In Alan Dudic's voice. He's a genius. He's brilliant. I love it. And he's funny. Uh, who else is in the show? Uh Gina Torres, uh, Morena Bacaran. That's what I'm thinking. Uh Adam Baldman. Adam Baldwin. Adam Baldman. Yes. He's not bald yet. Rude. Adam Baldwin. Uh Jewel. God, what's her name? Jewel?
SPEAKER_00Who's Adam Baldman?
SPEAKER_03I don't know who Adam Baldman is.
SPEAKER_00But who was he in the show?
SPEAKER_03Oh, he played uh Jane. Jane, yes. Oh, that's right.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay. He's the guy he was in the Matrix.
SPEAKER_03The muscle. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He was also in The Matrix?
SPEAKER_03Was he in the Matrix?
SPEAKER_00Wasn't he? Yeah, he was on the boat. He was like one of the guys on the boat.
SPEAKER_03Could be. Maybe this.
SPEAKER_00Maybe the second matrix.
SPEAKER_03Let's see. Let's check out Adam Baldman. Not seeing it on his filmography.
SPEAKER_00Adam Baldman. Maybe I'm just thinking. Maybe it had just his character on that show looked like somebody from the Matrix boat.
SPEAKER_03I I do not see the Matrix on his filmography. Alright, fair enough. Unless it was an uncredited role, which could possibly be.
SPEAKER_00Well, did you look up Adam Baldman or Adam?
SPEAKER_03Fair. He was in Because maybe I'm thinking of Adam Baldman. He could have been.
SPEAKER_00I think he was.
SPEAKER_03He was in uh Independence Day. He played Major Mitchell, which was the guy at Area 51 that kind of took them around to ended up doing all the things. I don't know if you guys have seen Independence Day. Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum. He just was just some random guy at the No, I mean he ended up playing a fairly large role. I don't know. I don't think so.
SPEAKER_00I don't remember that.
SPEAKER_03He was in the TV show Chuck. He played uh Major Casey in that one. What? Did anybody watch Chuck?
SPEAKER_00No, nobody's watched that show. Brett has a question, it seems.
SPEAKER_04I I feel like I was not prepared for this category because uh in his filmography or whatever, uh it also says he was in Serenity. Have you ever watched that show? Yeah, yeah, that was the movie. Oh, the movie. Okay, I was thinking it was an ever another TV show. Like, how have I missed this? Yeah, no, I've seen it. Okay. Yeah, basically more Firefly.
SPEAKER_00But so what's are we just like what's a member a thing that you remember or appreciate about the TV show Firefly?
SPEAKER_03Sure. I think it's just a general discussion.
SPEAKER_00Sure. I uh appreciate the sort of mashup of genres. Like that it's really a western, yeah. Um, which I which I really like, but with the sort of space western. Yeah, it's like with the sci-fi sort of but not cowboys versus aliens.
SPEAKER_04Right. Yes. Done well, I shouldn't yeah.
SPEAKER_00So it's just a a clever way to to do that to sort of freshen up maybe some of those sort of western tropes that at the time I think people thought were pretty tired and stale. Because this was like 2001 through three, I think it was 2002 through three.
SPEAKER_02There were only 14 episodes. That was short. That's crazy. I kind of forgot that was it.
SPEAKER_03Yep. That's really so good though. Sad. My my favorite episode is the one where they go to the planet where the all the people like revered Jane. Like thought he was the hero and had the statues. And then they're like, they're in the bar singing the song about him, the hero of Canton, the man they call Jane. And then he's like sitting there, like, oh my god, like, don't recognize. I don't think in the episode they actually recognized him. I think they got out. But that episode was so funny though.
SPEAKER_00I I enjoyed that. I remember very few specifics about the plot. I remember sort of generalities about I don't either. Sort of the overall plot. Or I remember they were sneaking cargo at one point in time. They're on a rickety old ship.
SPEAKER_02The ship is cool. Like I rem I enjoy what they did with the ship too, like different components they did. Like I think in one episode, like the life support system goes out and different things like that, too. They did a good job of bringing those components in still to keep it to be grounded in kind of some space type stuff.
SPEAKER_00So you know, it was almost they were always going to some other planet, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04You know, it was almost like an early version of steampunk.
SPEAKER_02That's fair.
SPEAKER_04Sure. With like the space themed and like how rickety kind of cobbled together it was.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. I could see that. I'm just impressed all four of us have seen it.
SPEAKER_04There's not very many things we've all consumed.
SPEAKER_03Correct. I don't know if you could go out and find four consecutive people who have seen Firefly just off the street. So I'm I'm impressed that we've all seen it. I do feel like I should go rewatch it now.
SPEAKER_02But it's ugly. I kind of want to.
SPEAKER_00I mean, it's interesting. I bet it's been at least 20 years since I saw it. Yeah. Um because I think that I f saw it on some internet platform. Um like when I was I was at home after graduating seminary, which would have been um like 2010-ish.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so it was fair fairly aged when you saw it then.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Like almost 10 years old. And I don't remember maybe on Hulu, maybe is how I saw it?
SPEAKER_03Sure, I think that is that might be.
SPEAKER_00Was Hulu around at that point? Yeah, because it was this that was how I saw. Okay. Uh there's a uh British comedy called Spaced, okay, which stars um who's the guy? Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Uh I think Edgar Wright was involved in it. It was sort of like one of their early collaborations. Sure. Yeah. At any rate. And that's how I saw I remember watching Spaced and Firefly. So, but it's interesting, it's been 20 years at least, since I saw it, and I haven't re-watched Firefly since then. Yeah. But it is very memorable. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Totally. Yeah. Uh another one last thing. I don't know, I don't know how much more discussion. It's been a while since we've all seen it, so I don't know how much more discussion there's gonna be here.
SPEAKER_04We need to have a watchboard.
SPEAKER_03Uh the director of uh Firefly was Joss Whedon, who ended up directing the first Avengers movie. Like he's a director a lot of a lot of people know him because he directed the first Avengers movie.
SPEAKER_00So also a bunch of Buffy.
SPEAKER_03Buffy, yes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yep. So that would also be an appropriate show for this group to watch.
SPEAKER_02Definitely have not watched any of that.
SPEAKER_05Sure. No.
SPEAKER_03They did a big Buffy thing at uh uh Denver fan expo a couple years ago. I missed the boat on the DD one. I'm still irritated about that right before we started playing. Anyway, uh any other thoughts on Firefly other than we all like it. It's good. Watch it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, because you can still watch it on Hulu.
SPEAKER_03We're still waiting for the TV. Okay, is that what you were judging? Okay, we have this to the list later. Okay. Uh, I think that's gonna do it for this episode.
